The Naples Zoo is a 43-acre botanical garden and zoo. Henry Nehrling, a botanist and ornithologist, planted the first plants in 1919. After Nehrling's 1929 death, the gardens became neglected. Julius Fleischmann, who had created lakes and a path, added new plants to the gardens and introduced waterfowl and parrots. The Caribbean Gardens opened in 1954. Larry and Jane Tetzlaff (aka Jungle Larry or Safari Jane) introduced the exotic animals to the zoo in 1969 after Fleischmann's death in 1968. There are 70 species in the zoo, but not all of them are displayed at once. The main path runs for about one mile and passes the main exhibits, as well as the tropical garden that was first established in 1919. The primate expedition cruise takes visitors to the zoo to see the islands where the primates are kept.
